A centuries old garden redesigned in Tring
When a well-established garden in Tring had slipped into wear and neglect – spalled concrete, tired paving, over-grown planting beds and faded outdoor zones – the brief was clear: breathe new life into this space. After a competitive pitch against three other landscape practices, Karl Harrison Landscapes Ltd was appointed as principal designer. The clients offered carte blanche, and Karl set to work with vision, creativity and precision. Garden design transformation Tring is something that Karl lives, loves and has done for over 20 years.
From forgotten gardens to flourishing happiness
The original garden told the story of time — aging surfaces, neglected planting and little sense of flow. The transformation begins with a bold decision: remove the overgrown planting, strip out the tired paving, and re-imagine the topography with movement, elegance and seasonal interest. The result is a garden that mother nature herself would have been proud to call her own.
A transition of colour & form in every season
The new planting beds were designed not just for one season, but for a transition of colour and structure throughout the year. Architectural shrubs, textured grasses, flowering perennials and strategically placed local pottery forms create interest in every month. Each bed becomes its own seasonal drama while sitting harmoniously within the entire project garden design transformation Tring.
A sweep of clay paver path
Central to the design is a sweeping new path in warm clay pavers. This fluid curve reshapes the existing lawn, creating a dynamic terrain that invites movement, exploration and delight. The lawn’s new topography becomes a feature in itself, responding to the garden’s mature bones while infusing life, rhythm and elegance.
A water feature of style
At the heart of the garden stands a striking water feature – by Alison Armour – rendered in glass and stainless steel, surrounded by circular stone detail that accentuates its geometry. This zone replaces a previously water-logged lawn area and is finished with self-binding gravel and vintage adornments, issuing a sense of refined yet relaxed luxury.
Pool changing room & raised timber platforms
Adjacent to the pool area, Karl designed a stylish changing room and large platform steps constructed in premium Millboard timber. These platforms not only address function but deliver high-end aesthetics – the visual anchor for poolside living and elegant outdoor lounging.
Raised “Good Life” planters
Embracing the client’s love of gardening and self-sufficiency, Karl integrated a “plant your own” series of raised planters. These bespoke planting zones allow easy access and rich presentation for herbs, vegetables or seasonal flowers, aligning beautifully with the garden’s luxurious yet practical ethos.
The glen & wild seed planting
To the rear left of the site, a miniature “Glen” was introduced: multistem Betula utilis ‘Jacquemontii’ trees rise through a wild-seed meadow, offering texture, dappled light and serene movement. This woodland-inspired corner is the perfect counter-point to the more formal terraces and creates quiet, contemplative space.
Garden office & vistas for all seasons
Though not always visible in the main images, the new garden office enjoys sweeping views in all directions. Each vista has been carefully framed and planted to deliver year-round enjoyment, whether winter structure, spring blossom or summer richness.
