Commercial Anti-slip decking for first-floor pub balcony
Designing and building decking structures is an everyday occurrence for Karl Harrison Landscapes. They have used a certified hardwood timber to create a complex decking arrangement and handrail in matching timber. The project in Kew Bridge was for a national contractor as part of a new housing development.
Our works were to design the timber element, large sections of FSC Oak, homegrown in the UK, fixed to a bespoke steel frame. Oak was used for this project due to its certification and by the client’s specific request.
Hardwood decking structural timber
The framework, ex 100 x 50 in a compatible hardwood was made secure to the concrete platform via pedestals, adjustable to maintain a 1:80 water runoff. Stainless fixings were required to make the frame secure and essential when working with Oak.
The decking fixings were carpenters mate No 10 Bugle heads in 316 stainless, fixed into the decking with countersunk holes, each hole .0mm larger than the shank of the screw to allow for movement.
Oak balustrade for first-floor terrace
The balustrade was completed in FSC Oak, the sections of timber were substantial, more of a leaning rail than a handrail. Ex 175 x 125 to form the largest sections which were rebated to lap either side of the supporting rail. Then glued with C4 Polyurethane and 6.3mm stainless fixings.
The uprights had to wrap around the steel balustrade arrangement and with minimal joints. The huge sections of Oak were rebated to allow for a U section to be fabricated with a lid so to speak to finish the upright section. The cross members were fabricated on site due to tolerances in the steel. A complex and detailed arrangement, the weather gods were smiling during this project.
The timber has been enhanced by OWATROL Products, PrepDeck, Net-Trol and D1 oil.
We also designed and built a curved solid hardwood bench for this project.
