A Christmas Front Garden Gift by Karl Harrison

What about a New front garden as a Christmas gift idea

Imagine waking up after Christmas, stepping outside and finding your front garden completely transformed. No elves in sight, but plenty of evidence that Father Christmas has a very good landscape designer on speed dial. Christmas Front Garden Gift is the gift that gives for years

That is exactly what happened here – a secretly commissioned front garden redesign from a thoughtful father to his daughter and son-in-law.

A Secret Brief from “Father Christmas”

The phone call came from Dad.
He loved the house. He did not love the front garden.

It was dark, overgrown and uninviting. Most plants sulked in deep shade. The few that survived became an all-you-can-eat buffet for the local deer. So he asked me, quietly, to become Father Christmas with a drawing board.

The plan was simple. I would design a brand-new front garden as a surprise gift. Once the concept was ready, the homeowners could add their own ideas, while the real client – Dad – picked up the bill. Not a bad present to find under the tree.

“Imagine that, I was Father Christmas for real… I couldn’t believe it… I still can’t”

From Shady Jungle to Calm Plateau

The existing garden had almost no level, usable space. Sloping ground and tired planting meant you walked through it rather than spent time in it.

The new design starts with a generous plateau of self-binding gravel. This creates a stable, comfortable surface for walking, pausing and simply taking in the view of the planting. The gravel area is slightly separated from the elevated beds, which gives the garden depth and structure without feeling cramped.

To achieve this new topography we imported:

  • 150 tonnes of fresh topsoil

  • 4.5 cubic metres of rich compost

That is a lot of material for a “front garden”, but it allowed us to shape the ground properly, improve drainage and give the plants the best possible rooting environment.

Concrete Forms as Garden Architecture

Rather than a traditional wall or timber edging, this project uses cast-in-situ concrete forms.

These crisp, pale structures:

  • Hold the new soil levels securely

  • Provide strong visual lines that guide you through the space

  • Double as informal seating for morning coffee or a quick chat with neighbours

They give the garden a quiet, architectural confidence. Even in winter, when the planting is resting, the garden still looks intentional and finished.

Planting for Shade – and Against Deer

The garden is heavily shaded for much of the day. Therefore, the planting palette focuses on shade-tolerant, textural species that look good for long periods and cope with these conditions.

At the same time, we had to think about the local wildlife. The deer are charming; their eating habits are not. So the scheme leans towards plants that are less appetising to deer, while still offering foliage contrast and seasonal flowers where possible.

The effect is lush, layered and surprisingly bright in low light. Fresh greens and warm leaf tones bounce the light from the path and the house, making the whole space feel more open.

The Mystery Palm That Stayed

One feature we chose to keep was the tall Trachycarpus fortunei by the entrance. It was planted by the original developer and nobody is quite sure why – but it works.

Underlit at night and surrounded by the new shade planting, it now feels deliberate; almost like the garden was always designed around it. Sometimes the best design decision is knowing what to keep.

Lighting and Irrigation for Effortless Evenings

To make the garden work all year, we included:

  • Subtle LED lighting to pick out trunks, foliage and paths

  • Automatic irrigation to keep everything healthy without daily watering

As dusk falls the concrete forms soften, the palm glows gently and the planting takes on real depth. This is now a front garden you actually want to sit in, not just walk past.

There is even a small window of sunshine in mid-afternoon – about an hour or so – which is perfect for a chilled drink and a quiet pause before the evening.

A Very Different Kind of Front Garden

This project is not a standard lawn-and-shrubs frontage. Instead, it is:

  • A usable outdoor room

  • A calm arrival space for the house

  • A thoughtful, long-lasting family gift

It shows what can be achieved when you treat the front garden with the same care as the back. Good structure, intelligent planting and considered lighting have turned a dark, underused space into a welcoming, modern landscape.
