Burnt English Oak Cladding Installation. Karl Harrison Landscapes Ltd has been designing and installing specialist timber cladding projects since 2003. Timber structure, decking and many applications require a specialist hand to direct precise installations. These are displayed on a serious portfolio of professional works.
Project Overview
From its concept in the early planning stage, Karl Harrison Landscapes, led by Karl Harrison worked with Losberger de Boer to create a commercial cladding design. The project is deep in the heart of London’s financial district surrounded by skyscrapers… a most impressive skyline.
We used Charred oak used to complete the exterior covering of this well-presented structure. A sharp building with equally sharp lines stands alone surrounded by London’s skyscrapers.
More than 400 square metres of high-grade oak precisely hand made and presented within contracted time – There are strict expectations of Canary Wharf Contractors; We met these at every stage of this installation.
Oak has an expected movement coefficient, with this in mind they had allowed for this with stainless fixings and enhanced detailing. Furthermore, a tongue and grooved ESL004, selected to enhance the stability of the timber and reduce movement.
The black-tipped stainless screws are face fixed. We use blackhead screws because this makes the blackhead vanish (well almost) in the charred cladding board and are virtually unnoticeable. Shou Sugi Ban™ Cladding materials for this project have been supplied by Exterior Solutions Ltd.
Karl Harrison said, “The grain is bursting out of each piece, it’s such an impressive timber to use as charred cladding”.
Cladding Design Detail
The structural Engineer agreed to the specialist aluminium batten support brackets designed by Karl Harrison. The SE also specified SFS Intec peel rivets to mechanically fix the custom-made brackets.
The timber fin arrangement needed to support vertical LED lighting and the cladding, not too taxing nevertheless design had to take place and a custom item was required.
