Low maintenance garden in Amersham. This garden looked very much like your stereotypical new build garden. The vast majority grass and a small flagstone patio. Other than that, an existing raised planter and path. Simple but a bit mundane and regular maintenance is needed at least through the summer months.
Client Brief
The number 1 priority here is making this garden low to no maintenance. The clients also wanted somewhere to sit to get the most of the sun, perhaps this is also a dining area. They were happy to leave the rest up to Karl to get creative.
Garden design
This garden is on a slope so Karl decided to step the space into 3 areas. The difference in elevation from one end to the other is approximately 500mm so 3 steps at 170mm will work perfectly. The first stepped area is the existing patio. The clients did want a lawn area just minimum maintenance so Karl opted for a fake lawn; this makes the second stepped area.
Karl also persuaded the clients to let them put a planting plan together for the existing raised planter. These could then be left to grow and won’t need much looking after. We also chose a contemporary grey to paint the planter and fence.
How to keep a garden low maintenance
The star of the show in this garden is a Trex Transcend deck using the Gravel Path colour with an Island Mist border. This also forms a step for the third level change. Karl chose to put the decking here because it’s the last bit of the garden to get the evening sun. Trex was an easy choice here because it’s no maintenance, has a 25-year warranty and looks contemporary.
