Accoya Decking Installed with Precision
Brief
The clients knew they wanted a decking terrace and gave Karl the following instructions. We want the decking to be made from timber. This timber must look and feel as natural as possible. Imagine stepping into your garden barefoot, to be greeted with warm smooth undulating decking. Karl came up with some creative concepts to get this natural timber texture in the form of decking. After researching and developing his ideas with James Latham Ltd he had some samples and a decking design to present to the clients.Accoya Decking Installed with Precision
Using the best materials possible is a priority to Karl. That’s why he specified Accoya timber. Accoya is a modified timber giving it a warranty of 50 years against rot outside; the perfect solution for timber decking. We can further enhance the timber by brushing it to the point of getting a smooth yet tactile texture that would be pleasant underfoot. As well as brushing to enhance the grain, each board has been sanded to get rid of any sharp unnatural corners and edges. Of course, as always, the devil is in the detail, and that’s why Karl’s design allowed for precision. For example, the posts from the property going through the decking need cutting around. Karl made sure these were exactly half a decking board on either side. Similarly, Karl needed to allow for an access panel to get to a rodding point. This piece couldn’t be side fixed like the rest of the decking so pre-drilling, countersinking, and plugging with plugs that have been hand-selected to follow the grain of the timber. You will notice the grain in this timber also matches the adjacent deck boards too.Letting your timber decking weather naturally
We could have chosen to oil the Accoya decking once installed; we opted not to. To fit the client’s brief, natural means letting nature take its course. Leaving the timber untreated it will eventually turn a contemporary yet very organic grey. The Accoya still carries the warranty, and the clients won’t need to re-oil the deck in the future.Karl said “It’s always a delight to dedicate time to making every detail on a project perfect. What’s next?
Karl has booked in to return to this project to install the bespoke Accoya feature wall. The design of the wall brings even more texture to the garden using different shapes and dimensions of Accoya timber. This will become an exciting feature that ties in with the decking.
